Birchgrove Old is located approximately 6 miles north east from the city centre.

Birchgrove is conveniently located for access to J44 of the M4 and the Swansea and Neath Valleys resulting in much of South Wales being in easy reach of Birchgrove. 

Birchgrove has grown in recent years since new large private residential estates have been completed in the area. 

The council properties in this area consist of houses and bungalows for OAPs.  There is also a sheltered complex (bedsits and flats).

The area has a local community centre and a rugby club.  There are a number of local pubs in Birchgrove, some of which contain restaurant facilities as well as bar meals. 

There is a children's play area and open green park - Heol Las Park for playing football, cricket etc.

Convenience stores are located around the village.  Birchgrove Post Office is now based in one of these shops. 

For larger grocery shopping, Birchgrove is 1-2 miles from Tesco in Llansamlet and Asda in Morriston. 

Birchgrove has a Comprehensive and Primary school.

The ruins of Scott's Pit Engine House dominate the lower end of Birchgrove and evidence of mine workings can still be found.
